Instagram Diaries: Summer in 9 Bites
|1) Perfect Macarons
Atelier Kawashima’s Hand-Crafted French Macaron
Destination: San Francisco
Spotted these little gems at a film multiplex in Japan Town. These mysterious yet memorable macs can be found at only a few select locations. (Check out @new_people) They come in simple flavors, but are perfectly made with a light egg-shell crust, and a soft chewy center.
|2) Fried Oysters & Baked Mac N’ Cheese
Shuck N’ Dive
Destination: Ft. Lauderdale
Ten minutes from the beach is a cajun dive bar serving po’boys, raw oysters, and some honest creole classics like gumbo and etouffee. Be sure to stop by if you’re around, especially if you’re a Saints fan.
|3) Deviled Eggs + Praline Bacon
Ford’s Fish Shack
Crispy bacon, candied pecans, and creamy ‘devilishly’ good eggs is part of just one of the genius concoctions at Sterling’s seafood oasis. They also have Maine Chips that are made of hand-cut potatoes, lobster, basil aioli and chopped tomatoes.
|4) Cuban Roast Pork + Mashed Yuca + Black Bean & Bacon Rice
A must-try in a city known for the best Cuban food, David’s Cafe is a local favorite even among celebrities like Chad Ocho Cinco – who has his own item on the menu. Great cuban comfort food (like cuban sandwiches, yuca fries, chicken and gravy) that you can’t find back in DC. It’s a shame I found them on my last day in Miami. P.S. Complimentary pre-buttered bread.
|5) Philly Cheesesteak
If you haven’t heard, the Nats are really giving us something to cheer for this year, after clinching their first east division title last night. So grab a beer, a hot philly cheesesteak and ignite that natitude at nats stadium – it’s about time DC had a sports team that can grant us some bragging rights! P.S. – Cheesy Mexican corn on the second floor! (Thanks Kristen!)
|6) Seafood Nachos
Harpoon Larry’s Oyster Bar
Destination: Virginia Beach
What do you do after visiting the VA Beach aquarium? Chow down on seafood, obvi.. Minutes from the beach, Harpoon Larry’s Killer Seafood Nachos is a massive plate of crispy waffle fries topped with clams, shrimp, and crab; smothered in queso cheese, sour cream and fresh salsa. Love topped with love smothered in more love is what you just read.
|7) Beer Battered Fish Tacos
Destination: Your Kitchen
I kicked off the summer season with a barbecue earlier this year and made these from my recipe box. The trick? fresh mangos, dark beer, and top-quality guatemalan crema. I make these at least once a year, and… they’re one of the few things in my recipe box that never come back with leftovers. Just sayin.
|8) Crispy Fries + Fried Egg
This hole-in-the-wall French diner serves up some of the best comfort-gourmet dishes (like bone marrow + oxtail marmalade and honey fried chicken) for late night dates and crowds who can appreciate a great lineup of Euro imported beer – open til 2 am Mon-Sat and 1 am on Sunday.
|9) Mediterranean Paella
Destination: Crystal City
The first time I had anything from Jaleo was at the Arlington Food & Wine Festival where Chef Drew Terp served paella from a massive pan. Bad paella has turned me away from choosing it over other dishes at Spanish restos – but after noticing the long line at the Jaleo tent, I had to see what the buzz was about. Needless to say, thanks to Jaleo – paella is back on my radar.
