Sullivan Street Bakery isn’t one of the most obvious or famous food joints in New York, which is one of the reasons why I enjoy coming here every time I’m in town. You don’t have to stand in a long line for a cup of coffee and a breakfast pastry here. Instead – you can enjoy your quiet morning snack on a bench next to a large window that pours sunlight in to warm your skin and brighten your day before you head back out into the streets of Hell’s Kitchen.
Their most popular pastry is their stuffed bomboloni, a fluffy pastry that tastes like a buttery doughnut dusted in powdered sugar and stuffed with fruit jelly that takes this little cupcaked sized snack a step up from the original jelly doughnut. As if someone took a fine knife and cut around the center of a jelly doughnut and threw away the edges – the bomboloni gets straight to the point as it instantly gives you a bite of the soft, fluffy bread and the jelly all in the first bite.
However my personal favorite pastry here, having a major salt tooth and all, would be their olive stecca; a long pastry that smells and tastes like a buttery and well seasoned pizza crust, sprinkled generously in sea salt with whole, pitted olives that are thumbed all the way down the stick like little green buttons that serve as a savory surprise in every other bite.
Not crazy about olives? The Stecca also comes with grape tomatoes, or even whole cloves of garlic.
Other delicious pastries include their sweet mini champagne grape bread, and pork & peach panini.
For the early bird that enjoys the stillness of the morning – enjoy a quick and quiet breakfast that will hum a tune of joy in your mouth to start of your day with a bite of peace, before heading back to the bustling streets of New York City.
